"I took all my belongings downtown to be pawned, I was spread like manure on the White House lawn..." (from "Mumbo Jumbo" by Carey Chaney, copyright 2001)
I got my first guitar in 1963, an inexpensive Sears "Silvertone" acoustic. I played it for years; it had good action and good intonation, pretty good tone. I've still got it, but its now very beat up and untune-able. I started writing songs around '64 - '65. The first record I got as a kid was "Ventures World Tour." The next one was probably "Meet The Beatles." I was also listening to the Beach Boys in an area (Idaho) where the "closest thing to surf was the froth on a chocolate cake." My first group (with my brother Mark) was called "The Midnight Surfers." Ha!

"Many sailors on Melvillian seas have found them teeming with thematic
content; they have hoisted in their nets and hauled in a plentitude of
strange and prescient creatures..."
The above quote is from my essay Toward The Discovery Of A 'Mental Template' In Herman Melville's Moby Dick. This creative mind-bubble is featured in the literature section.
I had an article published on Willa Cather's The Professor's House in the Winter/Spring 2005 issue of the Newsletter and Review of the Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial and Educational Foundation. This way to Cather Land: www.willacather.org. The article was reprinted in the Nebraska English Journal.
From time to time, I would also like to feature a favorite piece by Dylan Thomas or Elizabeth Bishop or Arthur Rimbaud…
